Knowing about where a thing comes from, or by/for whom it was made, is usually considered part of it's value. Part of that value relates to functional considerations, but it also relates to the subtext around the thing and the mindsets of the people who interact with it.

Locally grown. Union Proud. 100% Fair Trade. Made in America. monozukuri.

As design researchers, we are always looking to understand how products and services exist in context they are used, in order to understand deeply the range of goals that drive user and consumer behavior. And often times, it is digging into the messy, "thick" kind of data like language use which provides the clues to bring things together.

The other day, I happened to come across a short article describing why people in Nigeria would not be buying iPhone 7s despite Apple's popularity in the country. Within points of basic economic issues and supply and demand, the author mentioned the large amount of second-hand phones available, popularly referred to as "London use" phones.

Intrigued by the euphemism for used items, a quick web search resulted in several hits for "london use" phones, electronics, and cars.

But why "London use"? When did this phrase originate? Is it only used in Nigeria? What is the extent of its use? How do people feel about this phrase?

I couldn't find anything which gave me insight into this until I found the following instagram video by Nigerian comedian, Leakingmouth.

What seems like just an exaggerated mock-advertisement for selling fairly used products, it quickly slips past electronics to include agricultural and political 'products'.

A few twitter posts from as early as 2013 show that "London use" indicates a more trusted quality (as compared to domestic products), but at a price that is within reach. But, chickens London use ? London used ??

What could have been simply a small term describing a incidental fact about used products in Nigeria ended up connecting to a deeper concern about opportunities and capabilities among Nigerians today.

It reminded me a bit of how many Americans will talk about "Mexican Coke", the version of Coca-Cola that uses real sugar instead of the high-fructose corn syrup used for the domestic American market. A closer taste to the original and harder to find, it has become a shorthand for the kinds of compromises made to quality based on corporate interests.

Without knowing much about Nigerian people or society, I can only hypothesize about what "London use" symbolizes for them. But my sense is that, like "Mexican Coke" for Americans, or monozukuri for Japanese, looking into the phrase "London use" could lead to some interesting insights and a far richer understanding of what concerns people in Nigeria.
