Recently, mct has launched a new event series called “Culture Meet Up” to create space for encouraging international cultural exchange and promoting global business activities. Each month, mct invites a foreign guest who is living and working in Japan come to our cozy CHIKA space for a lively discussion with mct members on several topics ranging from history and education to lifestyle and entertainment. Earlier this month, mct welcomed a IT engineer in his mid-30s from Bangalore, India as our first guest.

Today, we want to highlight some interesting learning about family and its values in India. A major concept of Indian family is the joint family. Although the nuclear family has been emerging in India along with the increase of a younger generation with better opportunities for jobs and wealth, the joint family still remains the main type of family in India. Joint families still account for more than 60% of Indian families in big cities, and even more in rural areas.

As a value of joint family, family bond and responsibility to parents are very important. In India, a man must take the responsibility to take care of his parents when they get old. Our guest, though having lived for five years and enjoyed a good life in Japan, answered us that he must go back to his hometown Bangalore in several years to take care of his parents because he is the only son.

As a part of joint family culture, arranged marriages also remain common in India. Within the family networks, one family’s son and the other family’s daughter who are considered to have same conditions will be introduced and arranged as marriage partners. Since marriage is not a personal matter of the son or daughter, but a “face” matter for the whole family, it is very important to ensure marriage partners be equal in all aspects.

Potential groom and bride must come from a similar background, the same social class, same education, and even their horoscopes should be matching! Of course, in some senses the similar background will bring the harmony for the marriage, especially, when many couples just get married a few months, sometimes a few weeks after being introduced even without dating.

We all somehow understand that social class is important in India, but after speaking with him we know the story more vividly, and we can consider social class more critically when considering consumers in India.

We will share more exciting findings on coming post. Let visit our blog frequently for more reading.
